Before petrol stations, pumps were found in front of local businesses such as grocery stores, hardware stores, and even pharmacies. The petrol could not be seen in these pumps, so customers often overpaid for watered down gasoline from dishonest sellers.

Gulf opened the first drive-in service station in 1913. When that station opened, the signage promised "Good Gulf Gasoline" a slogan that was used until the middle of the 20th century.
